I think buying IDA makes sense if you are a software developer who is developing shareware or commercial products.
A shareware or commercial software developer is paid for his work so he can buy IDA without problems. By selling his software he will get the money ,which he spent for IDA, back.
It doesn't make sense to buy IDA if you need it for cracking only. Even if you got enough money to buy it. Crackers are not paid for their work (normally). This means that they won't get the money, which they spent for IDA, back like developers do.
You have to think economically before you buy (expensive) software. E.g.: Does it really make sense to buy VC++ if you just want to develop loaders or patchers? Does it really make sense to buy an expensive PE protector if you just want to protect your freeware products with it?
