Yea, maybe we should rename the 'Like' button to 'Thank You' instead. And rename the 'Reputation +1' to 'Add reputation' (+1 is really confusing since it's also used by Google Plus instead of like).
Anyways to answer your question Git: it's just a minor subtlety in language in my opinion, for now use the 'Like' button if you just want to thank someone for posting. If you feel like someone should be upgraded for his post, use the 'Reputation +1' button. For members that are Family or higher already, it doesn't matter.
The intention from the forum staff was that Family+ members could give reputation to the 'Friends' so they can become 'Family'. The Like button is the replacement for the 'Thank you' button, but it went a little weird.
