IRC has always been awful.

XDCC bots go down, or you get kicked for some gay reason.. etc

Too much hassle.

Direct Connect

I've found DC to be the fastest way of getting software. The dowside is that some hubs require outrageous amount of stuff to be shared.

With Usenet my ISPs server is pretty ok but I normally try to find free newsservers. Retention is normally pretty awful but there are some nice Russian ones for small releases.

I used to pay for a usenet provider (doenst exist anymore)
The claimed to mirror most binary newsgroups but there were always one or 2 files missing so i could do much good with it
I cancled the subscription and never tryed a new one cause i lost my faith in usenet and binaries

I used to swear by usenet my ISP had two seperate servers dedicated to binaries opened up Newsbin started my downloads by the time i was home from work i had everything I needed. And then i moved and my new ISP is particular on what groups it carries. I couldn't bring myself to pay for a usenet service. So switched to IRC.

For new stuff, I would prefer IRC

Personally I'd recommend IRC, especially for someone with big bandwith. You generally don't have to stand in queues (even for fresh new stuff) if you can get things as fast as 50Kb/s

With smart script supporting resuming (like dccAssist) and some good search engine (like www.ircspy.com) it can be really nice.

In Poland usenet is not an option. alt.binaries.*? I can only dream of...
