Protecting an eBook on CD

One of my friends wrote an ebook in PDF format and wants to distribute it on CD. I wonder how it can be protected from illegal copies.
the first thing came to my mind was: wrapping in with a self-written code and activating online, but this method requires a lot of coding and having a dedicated server. the next I thought about was using a commercial CD protection which makes copying the CD itself more difficult. the time I was into these things one of the famous one was Laser-Lock.

so guys, do you know any good CD protector for this case? I want to know your opinions about it. any practical suggestion is appreciated :-)

there are several tools for this, by the way each has its own advantages and disadvantages.

you can find a good comparison on

thank you guys! but most of those apps are 2000-3000 dollars; that means the author should sell 600 of his product to afford it (each ebook is about 5$). btw, the most effective way of protection with those programs is through internet activation which as I mentioned requires a dedicated server.
I'd like to stick to the plan which the CD itself cannot be copied at all. If I find anything I'll share it with you. or maybe you have something...

Unhappily, by my reckoning, there is no efficient methods to protect PDF file^_^
These is a hole in any version of Acrobat's DRM_check_circle, from 4.0 to 9.2.0.
see the first&second result in google.cn with this:Ȩޱ©

You can release the PDF file in VIP Custom Edition with certificate in Acrobat version 9.2.0 extend.
And, each Custom Edition have the secret watermark.
And, told the legal reader not to release his certificatehehe

My best way is: I use the secret script in PDF file to check the legal catalog's name.
If no,close the PDF viewer.
This is a simple way to cheat the computer illiterate^_^

If use the secret script in PDF file, you must set up a certificate in 256-bit AES to protect the script not to be easily viewed.
more, save the pdf file in PDF-1.7 format, very few third-party PDF reader can open it^_^
In short, we have done all the work is temporary protection.
I my school age, I had modified the ACROBAT reader to support the modified PDF file^_^
You can use winlicense&VMP&many others tools to protect this reader.
This is a rogue skills but really effective, hehe

The main problem looks the price for protection.
For example you can use SHK key to protect the acrobat reader and the only one who have the right key with protected acrobat can read it. This will increase the cost of the book about 30-50$ which looks like unacceptable if the price of ebook is only 5$.
I think you cant find ready made strong protection which will not increase too much the price of the ebook. The way is make some own custom thing.

Multimedia Protector test result here...

When using Multimedia Protector encrypted PDF files, it uses a built-in password to open the PDF file.
We know, PDF, once set to open password protected, is the most secure methods of protection.
Although you can steal out the temporary extracted PDF, but does not know the built-in password in Multimedia Protector, still unable to open it.
In short, this PDF if it is safe, depending on level of Multimedia Protector's own encryption.
The experienced cracker maybe can find the built-in password, hehe.
