What he did was ETHICAL hacking...he did not deface the website or damage any data.

Hacking is unethical. NO way around that. Compromising a system is as unethical as compromising a system and taking data.

Take this, you break into a house and watch someone elses cable tv. You break into someones house and steal a loaf of bread. Is the former ethical because no damage was done?

If I made bombs, but didn't actually set them off myself, but instead just left them where anyone could pick one up and do with it what they wanted, could I truely claim I wasn't responsible for the expolsion which was sure to follow?

Bombs have legitimate uses. It'd depend on the ethics of the person who found the bomb.

The US sells bombs all the time, do they take responsibility when one falls into the hands of a terrorist?
