We had a drive get farked like this. (BSY)
Most of the firmware on new drives are no longer stored on chips. Apparently there is a special section on the drive in which the firmware resides. The basic firmware on the chips loads the firmware off the drive and then commences boot up during POST. There was a bug in the code on the hard drive firmware which was basically a ticking time bomb. Each boot brought you one step closer to doom. I like the post you found by using the special adapter to connect to the drive and initiate commands manually. Good example of somebody's Hardware reversing! Interestingly enough the article says that Seagate will recover free of charge. This appears to only happen in the US, we are outside the US and this cost us $1000 to recover the drive. At least we got all our data back! |

Using something like Buspirate (http://code.google.com/p/the-bus-pirate/) you should not even need to solder anything.
