Smartfin acquires Hex-Rays

Hex-Rays, a Belgian cybersecurity company that develops advanced reverse engineering software solutions, has been acquired by a consortium of investors led by Smartfin, a leading European venture capital and private equity investor, and including co-investors SFPIM and SRIW. Ilfak Guilfanov, the founder of Hex-Rays and architect of the technology platform, also reinvests a substantial amount in the new structure.

Saw this one coming after seeing posts here recently about them dropping the subscription model and returning to the older license scheme. Forgot to do proper market research I suppose.

DataRescue -> Hex-Rays -> SmartFin. New name, same product, no worries

IMHO, Ilfak saw his/their future. Ghidra is open source and provides a bunch of decompilers. Binary Ninja is growing in front of our eyes and it is dazzling. Also BN has a community who tries to develop more accurate disassembler/decompiler. On the contrary hexrays is a complete closed box.
I say, Ilfak made a good+right move for himself.

I really wonder what is next; by means of "are they going to reduce the price of IDA Pro"?

IBM -> CentOS (or anything taken over by IBM..)
Compuware -> SoftIce
Norton -> X-Tree

Probably a price increase... Also probably going to go "cloud only" for things like the decompiler, to protect IP. Hate this trend of SaaS everything.

I think Ilfak foresaw the future of IDA Pro and the ever-shrinking market of his tool with newly released tools like BinaryNinja and Ghidra that offer remarkable results at less price/0 price and a comparable active community that actively try to extend/enhance these products.

It was just a matter of time before something emerged to challenge the monopoly of IDA Pro, and when it happened, the Hex-Rays team tried and failed to fight for their seat at the top.
They released a better free version and tried subscription models to offer cheaper prices, but that was too late, active IDA Pro community members already migrated to these tools.

Ilfak try to leave a sinking ship, But I hope the new company doesn't try to milk IDA Pro position by making it cloud service and fuck the regular users.

That's literally the tech startup model. Develop tech, get funding, grow a userbase, run at a loss until you get bought or fail, pay out funders if you get bought and walk away with your 20-30%.
