Just Cause 3
Hi to all members,
i have a question about this game. (i'm never been into games cracking,cd checks or some easy one were ok for me but now i see that a game like Just Cause 3 is using denuvo technology and at this time of post none groups crack it,useless to mention here groups who cracked recent protected games with denuvo,it's like the old time with starforce, many games were never cracked or months, years later) what is happening with 'the scene'? greetings to all who deserve it.

The 'scene' for gamehacking is basically dead. There is very few 'teams' still about. Most people went to selling their work instead of sharing / releasing it for free.

Pretty much what atom0s said except it's not "selling their work". They're selling code they put together that was coded by someone else. People figured out that they can make a good amount of money so they stopped caring about the fun part of game hacking. You could always visit the well known forums and ask for help there. Some people that are actual coders might give you some headers.

Reverse spirit tend to die but i hoped not so early and probably some members here are in this business but i may understand that offering a crack for a game and seeing it shared on thousand sites that earn money with can finally turn the art of cracking into money.
thank's for the replies.

Same with online game hacking due to some legal issues CE had in the past with certain online games. |

Many people stopped cracking games because it's no challenge any more.
10-15 years ago you had to have early access to physical CDs/DVDs (working in a replication plant or doing previews for game magazines) and had to be prepared that every new game uses a new version of the copy protection so you might have to recode all your tools and debug large parts of the copy protection again. The only documentation available was the one created by crackers by reverse engeneering. Today 95% of all games are released on Steam or similar platforms. They all use the same open documented API for which there are many emulators out there. The only things you have to do in order to crack a game is 1. preorder it, 2. download the encrypted game files, 3. the second it is released decrypt the files, 4. add an emulator, 5. RAR/ZIP them again, 6. upload it and feel cool. This doesn't provide any kind of challenge any more, as soon as you have a working emulator you don't even need any computer experience except using WinRAR and a FTP Client. From the remaining 5% probably 4% have a homemade and easy to bypass copy protection. And the remaining 1% use something strong which hasn't been researched much. Since many of the old crackers got bored by all the new "Steam crackers" and left the game, there are not many people left who could actually crack this kind of protection. I have no clue what makes "denuvo" so special, but if more games start using it, more people will research it and eventually games using this protection will get easier to crack. There are only very few scenarios in which a game could be virtually uncrackable. |

Just make you game "always on" and keep enough of the game logic on your servers... Acceptance for this kind of stuff luckily has been pretty low, but somebody's bound to try it again at some point.

Denuvo - here's what I know already:
1) Uses VMProtect on top of its own protection... 2) Uses some custom crypto-hell appearently (at least thats what I've been told)... 3) Uses some custom online check(s) stuff... Uncrackable? Hardly - but quite challenging, but again; I haven't had the pleasure of touching this yet, so I wouldn't really know how hard it is... |

@Atom0s:not my intention to ask for a crack nor i really care about this game,i know the rules,i were just surprised that it's not cracked at this time.
@further replies: i were only interested to know what great reversers of this place tought of it,feel free to remove the thread when useless @mods. happy day!

@n00b I'm prety sure it doesn't use VMProtect on top of it - that would mean there was a collaboration between VMProtect and the company that does Denuvo. Do you have evidence for that? Denuvo largely seems to be an anti-tamper solution, i.e. it will protect another drm from being patched.

It seems your assertion is correct - there are quite a few indicators that Denuvo shares the code generator with VMProtect. For example, the way control flow works between handlers is the same (e.g. push qword ptr [r12+rax*8], retn). Also, rbp points to the vm stack and rsi points to the opcode program, respectively. In that regard, no difference to how VMP works...interesting

Yeah it definitely makes use of VMP, and not just on top of its own stuff. I have only looked at VMP2 VM, but the differences between that and what I saw in denuvo are not really thaaaat big. I would assume it's just the VMP3 VM which was supposedly improved but I havent looked at it at all.
So I think it shouldnt be the VM stuff that poses such a big problem to scene teams. I dont know what does though. (Not that I could crack it or anything, you know, but from a theoretical/spectator point of view.) Last edited by deepzero; 03-20-2016 at 15:50. |
