Slipstreaming Windows with SP2

Hi, the guy next door (really) asked me if I would combine his XP Home and SP2 on an installation CD. OK no problem, done it many times before with XP Pro and no problems.

However, when he tries to install the package it comes up with the enter key box, even though I created a SIF for it. Moreover for some unhnown reason it will not accept his product key (it was made from his original CD) but will take any key from a later release - the M$ one with SP2 included!

Any ideas, it's gotten me baffled.

Was it a full Home edition CD or an OEM CD ?. There are a number of issues with slipstreaming an OEM CD. Do a google on "slimspstreaming home edition OEM" without the quotes and you'll find the answers.

Just because it is a full edition doesn't mean somebody else hasn't abused the key and it's subsequently been banned. Phone or email MS, they're actually pretty good at support, believe it or not!.

Hi Git, are you saying that M$ have written in to their SP2 release every key that has been banned

It is not that you cannot activate it, it's that you cant install it without entering ANY later key. I really do mean any key that's what I can't understand. His CD is the original 2001 full release, you would think that it would still install with that key.

Just one other thing, if you do it the long way round, install the original then SP2 it will accept the key, so it can't have been banned else it would not accept SP2

Someone else on the board sent a PM with another method of doing it, I am working on that at the moment. From his reputation I believe that it will be OK, any color but RED

Oh I see, I'd misunderstood. That's completely bizarre. You mentioned earlier about creating a SIF - have you tried without your created SIF?
