Passing of Niklaus Wirth - RIP

Those of us who've used Pascal or Delphi might know of Pascal's creator, Niklaus Wirth. He died on 1st January 2024 at the age of 89.

Like many, I've made a career out of work he produced.

May a great man rest in peace.

I owe my respects to Niklaus Wirth! One of the technical greats in our industry!

I had a couple of my early career years with Delphi (Object Pascal) v2.0 and above.

One of the fastest compiler during those days (unsure if it still holds the fort!) which could compile some 10+lakh LOC under 25-30 seconds with multiple .exe and .dlls.

Pascal was one of early languages which I had learned. Mostly Borland and Turbo Pascal versions!

It was different in many ways and those golden days!

I try to practice his thoughts (Wirth's law) whenever wherever possible. Small and efficient as possible!

You will be missed! RIP legend!

I'm sorry to hear that: Pascal was the first serious language I studied lots of years ago...

I started programming with Turbo Pascal and went on to Delphi back in the day.
Good times...

RIP Niklaus! Even though I hate `:=` notation, Pascal has an important role for me.

The ':=' operator is officially known as the assignment operator.
It was dubbed the walrus operator because the ':=' syntax resembles the eyes and tusks of a sideways walrus.

Walrus appeared in Python 3.8

Code:
>>> walrus = False
>>> walrus
False

>>> (walrus := True)
True
>>> walrus
True
I loved the early days of Object Pascal, Win32, and Delphi 1 and 2.
Everything started to fall apart to Borland when Anders Hejlsberg went to Microsoft.

BTW I still use Delphi and earn money from it, even after almost 30 years.

R.I.P Niklaus!
