Unhappy DriverStudio 3.1 problem after Windows Update

Hello!

I was using SoftICE 4.3.1 without any problems with the Windows Updates until August 2004 installed on my PC.

After I installed all the updates from Microsoft including the January updates(MS05-01, MS05-02, MS05-03), it doesn't work anymore.
I don't know which update is causing the problem.
I also tried to install the full DriverSudio 3.1 and update the OSINFO.DAT and OSINFOB.DAT to the latest available version, but it's still having problems.

SoftICE is running, but Windows is locked and I can't do anything except an hboot.

I also tried with the SymRetriever, but it's not useful either.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

i have same problem too. My solution - install full SP2 package. I think that sp1 + latest updates make system like pre-sp2 and softice's info.dat can't handle this version. Now i have xp sp2 version + all updates and 3.1 studion works ok.

I met same situation, even the latest driver studio 3.2 does not work either. I think infern0 gave the right answer.

How to make softice and windows work correct fully? The problem i experienced with first time installing Win XP SP2:

- My Software list would be 90 % Black (mutch black)
- Everytime i pressed right mouse i got memory error
- SoftICE would not work anymore

How to fix?

- Format PC & Install Win XP
- Windows Update (it will automaticly say when it wants to install SP2 * they recommend you*) then install it.
- All no problems... install latest drivers and now install your favourit software.

Wink

I too faced that same issue. I Resolved the issue by downloading the version 3.2 of driver studio and then updating the files NTICE.sys and osinfo.dat files from the DS 3.2 archive. Now my softice is working fine.

I have included the files NTICE.sys and osinfo.dat that will avoid the whole download of DS 3.2 (193 MB).

Just place these files in your windows\system32\Drivers\ folder. Please take a backup of the previous two just in case.

i had the same problem on winXPsp1 with softice 4.3.1 .
windows update KB885835 (12/14/2004) has changed ntoskrnl.exe to version 5.1.2600.1605(xpsp2.040919-1003) and softice could not hook function MICopyOnWrite, it went to loop EBFE, windows was locked...
i was waiting new OSINFO from Compuware, but nothing...
i used optional loading of old kernel in boot.ini to work with softice...
last week i saw in windows update KB885835 again.
i've install its, and kernel version was rollbacked!
softice works fine now (again)!

Dude it works perfect on SP2... i have everything up-to-date... i have SoftICE DS 3.1 installed on Windows XP SP2 Proffesional Dutch ... i have it legal btw... works just fine. You do need to enter "set BreakInSharedMods on" to make breakpoint work in SP2 (dunno if in other windows versions to)

man, it's same as i told. Install full SP2 and all will be ok, but the problem persists if you have SP1 and latest fixes. I think real good solutions are install full SP1 or run sice in virtual box with SP1 with no patches.

I can confirm that it works! :-)

For everybody else who has this problem, that DS 3.1 or SI 4.3.1 does not work after Windows Update, just create a new startup configuration in your BOOT.INI and add this setting at the end of the line:
"/KERNEL=OLD_KRNL.EXE", where "OLD_KRNL.EXE" is the name of your previous NTOSKRNL.EXE which was working.

The NTOSKRNL.EXE version 5.1.2600.1568 from 17.06.2004 is woking, so just rename it to "OLD_KRNL.EXE" and try again.

Credits go to UFO.

Just to make it more clear (this info is posted in all 3 threads):

If you have the latest Windows Updates installed (as of 24.02.05, MS05-15 is the latest), DriverStudio 3.1 or SoftICE 4.3.1 will WORK if you use the previous version of the NTOSKRNL.EXE, version 5.1.2600.1568 from 17.06.2004.

The update which is causing the problem is KB885835 which comes with a new NTOSKRNL.EXE, version 5.1.2600.1605 from 22.10.2004, and it seems that, for the moment, as of 24.02.2005, the OSINFO.DAT from Compuware's web site does not work with this NTOSKRNL.EXE.

You can find the old version in this directory: C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB885835$
(replace C:\WINDOWS with your actual path).

So, copy this NTOSKRNL.EXE to OLD_KRNL.EXE and add this line to your BOOT.INI:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional DS 3.1" /fastdetect /noguiboot /KERNEL=OLD_KRNL.EXE

Then just restart and whenever you want to run DS 3.1, just select the proper configuration
befre you start Windows.
:-)
