CrypKey Protection

I am trying to reverse a target using CrypKey 5.6 Build 1015.

More specifically it is used in a DLL which is part of an API for some expensive specialised hardware. Because of this I need to reverse it myself.

The problem is I can find very little information on Crypkey. The only two examples I have are:

http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=cache:Bm3umuULO8gJ:www.woodmann.com/crackz/Tutorials/Crypkey1.htm+CrypKey+5+Tutorial&hl=en

But this goes into code injection etc which is far too advanced for my understanding,

and:

http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=cache:LraLTVDm_yAJ:www.woodmann.com/fravia/marycri1.htm+CrypKey+reverse&hl=en

Unfortunately this is for a much older version of CrypKey than what I'm targeting.

I'm really looking for some more tutorials, advice or further sources of information that will be helpfull to me.

I couldn't find the 'Search' functions on these forums to find any pre-existing answers to this problem as I'm sure there must be. I haven't tried to reverse in years (never passed novice) and I'm still new to these forums so please be gentle with me.

I wasn't sure if this post was more appropriate in 'Requests' but I'm locked out from posting in there.

ravendug:

The first thing you need to learn how to do is to actively use your brain. It is the most important tool you have available to you. You started off on the correct path with a search, but you severly limit yourself when you only search for tutorials.

For example, what should be "obvious" to you, is that both this Forum and the Woodmann Forum have built-in SEARCH buttons at the top. They are both running vBulletin software and contain word indexes which are useful to find information. For example, putting "crypkey" in that SEARCH box here (without the quotes) yielded 22 threads here dealing with some reference to crypkey, including several relating to version 5.5 and 5.6, which are slightly higher in the series than your target. On the Woodmann Forum, using the same search criterial, I got 49 hits related to crypkey.

However, if you are so focused on your specific target, and only interested in removing the protection from that particular target, you are really wasting your time and not really reversing. You simply want a "crack" for that target and don't really care about learning how the protection actually works and how it has evolved over time. If you really want to learn about the protection, as opposed to solving the issues with this one target, then you really need to actually study the evolution of the protection, and these threads should start you on your way. The choice, is, of course, yours.

Regards,
