Bookmarks: How do you handle your browser bookmarks?
Dear friends;
How do you handle your bookmarks? I personally cannot find a neat way to do it. I just save them in my browser and then take backups ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Do you have any recommendations? |

As I have said in my first post; I am doing something similar already: backuping my bookmarks as json or HTML. So that I can update my browsers in different machines.
Once upon a time; there was a browser plugin; I cannot remember its name, it ends .....im or smth like that. Then they closed that service. I couldn't find something similar to that plugin. And I didn't like the Raindrop service1 |

I found this repository last time I was thinking about this exact problem https://github.com/hoarder-app/hoarder
It kinda "reinvented the wheel" regarding bookmarks but it has some awesome features like AI tagging for bookmarks. You need some sort of homeserver or vps to host it tho if you dont want to only have access to your bookmarks on your main pc. In that case you could just spin it up in docker. It also has browser extensions. |

I use to add into browser bookmarks but later lost when computer crash. I lost everything including the links to site where I bought some stucks. I dont even remember so I just forget it.
Now I just drag the links to desktop and copy to a folder. That folder as I check now contain more than 40 thousand link files. Thats about 2 year to 3 years of links. Ocassionaly copy folder to a portable hard disk as backup. Now no longer maintain bookmark or backups bookmarks. I just backup that folder link files. A simple method is just use portable browser so with all those bookmarks in it. Just backup the portable browser to portable hard disk or now most all use flash drive instead. |

If you have a lot (like 5 000) of tabs open in the browser, you want to also backup the current browser session, in addition to just the bookmarks.
Using Mozilla Firefox, the easiest way to backup the whole session (saved passwords, bookmarks, open tabs, add-ons) would be to write to Firefox's address bar about:profiles and click Open Main folder button, from there go up one folder level and copy-paste the folder ending in .default to a backup media. To automate this whole process, could be used for example program called Duplicati, it has network backup capabilities. Last edited by BigDiskBitRot; 01-28-2025 at 06:01. Reason: disabled smilies |
