Yeah, it's a nice publicity stunt. Normally you have to pay for major updates. However, when they released version 8 a while ago the upgrade was free for registered users. Currently they are beta testing v8.10 Preview 2. You can count on it that this new version is not for free. In other words, you can use your free registration for a short while only. Nevertheless it's a nice gesture!

There is rumour saying opera is going to be free to compete with firefox, so offering free registration code is to gain publicity.

Actually Opera has given out free codes before, and usually the work just like any other registration code, good for the next major version. So if you are lucky this code will work for versions 8 and then 9 as well. If you're lucky. Still better to stick to Firefox imo, but ya know.
