Question Mac OS X cracking

Hi,

does anyone know a good source for cracking tools for the mac?
I searched around but didn't find really usefull stuff... is there any
good debugger (like softice) for the mac? and what about a good
disassembler?

right now i'm using IDA under virtual pc which is ok but some other
small tools like LordPE or something would be great...

Well golly gee whiz, maybe you should try something desperate, such as using your favorite search engine and enter something, such as: "OS X debugger" (without the quotes of course). And after you try that, go really crazy and try something like "OS X cracking" (again without the quotes). Who'd a thunk it.

I don't believe MACNosy has been updated for OS X, but shsssssss! Don't tell anyone there are actually Debuggers made for that operating system available on the net.

Regards,

ah finaly i got one of those favourite JMI replys
well perhaps my first post wasn't clear enough...i have searched the net
for those kind of tools...but all i found wasn't really helpfull...macnosy is
only for os9 and not updated to X...then you can use ddd together
with gdb, not really helpfull too...

what i would like to have is some info what are the common tools for cracking
on mac os x. you find really much if you search for the windows plattform
including essays but nothing for mac...

OSX is basically BSD. Most of the concepts of cracking in unix or linux will apply. The debugger you will end up using is GDB. It takes some getting used to, but it is quite powerful for a user level debugger.

I believe antilove made a patch to add memmory searching to gdb. There is also a gdb config file more suited to cracking available. If you cant find these I will post them.

As far as LordPE and tools of the sort are only for Windows PE files. OSX uses ELF I believe. There aren't many packers made for unix. Some are upx, burneye, and shiva. These generally aren't used by commercial software. More commonly they are used to protect exploits.

Hope this helps.

I certainly do miss MACNosy. I started using it shortly after it was developed and actually met with its author several times, including at several MAC World conventions in San Francisco, quite a few years ago. I used MACNosy to remove the protection from PACE protected music software back in the 1980's.

The information about GDB is, of course, in the first search string I gave you. You would also find, and perhaps read an interesting PDF file titled:

A Debugger with GUI for OS X

which is a Master's Thesis by a student at Gothenburg University. The abstract states:

"This thesis describes the process of designing and implementing a debugger with a graphical user interface that is to execute under OS X on Apple Macintosh computers."

There is also discussion of a tool called "GNAT For Machintosh OS X" which I believe to be a script debugger. There are several others in the materials found with the search criteria.

There is a site called: Hardening Your Macintosh
with interesting information about OS X and has a link to security vulneribilities related to things OS X.

You might even have found something called:

Mac OS X Hacking & Cracking fun pack

Let me just repeat the mantra. If you want to leard how to debug a particular brand of software, you have to learn about the software and "how it works." So far, it would appear that you wish to skip Step A and go directly to Step B, without any really good understanding of the OS and how it works. Your privilege, of course, but you won't really improve your knowledge of the subject by simply looking for "one click fixes all" type solutions. There is simply no substitute for actually taking the time to study your intended "target."

If you understand some of how the software works, particularily at the debugger/debugging level, you have a much better chance of figuring out efforts by protectionists at mucking with your debugger to prevent you from cracking their protection. If you really do not understant that basic concept, you are at the mercy of waiting until someone else "solves" a particular problem for you and gives you a tool to "click" on. Again, you get to choose.

Regards,

thanks for all the information...i found most of them too but nearly all of them
were about hacking not cracking...
i don't want a click-n-crack tool i only search for particular information
how others attack protections on the mac, i'm really aware of the fact that
i have to learn the basics of the system...
i'm not a beginner in this art, but only for the mac system...

the only thing is i didn't want to invent the wheel again...i saw some
cracks/serials for mac apps and i was wondering how those guys succeed...

anyway thx

All the popular mac crackers reside here:
http://www.corruptfire.com/index.php?

And from my limited knowledge gdb is the way to go.

Check the forum part of the site out. there are tuts etc.
