Microsoft starts to mess with Sysinternals tools

Today I checked if there where any updates for one or several of my Sysinternals tools. To my suprise, all Sysinternals tools have been rebuilt on November 1st, 2006.

I compared what was changed. It seems like most code is just a recompile with different compiler settings. Microsoft has also placed a giantic new EULA in each and every executable. (all *.EXE have about the 2x - 4x the size they had before)

When Microsoft took over Sysinternals, they just packed the old executables together with new licenses. Now it seems they are messing around.

If you still want to get the latest "Sysinternals" version of your beloved tools, you should do it quickly, since nobody knows how long the old links will be working.

Just go to the new Sysinternals homepage, grab a link (like http://download.sysinternals.com/Files/<blabla>.zip) and replace "download" with "www". This way you can still get the old (working... ) versions of the tools.

If there is enough interest, I have a .rar file of essentially everything that was on their original site as of 7/31/06. It is approximately 22.7 MB which I could upload to the FTP.

This rar file contains the File and Disk; Information; Miscellaneous; Networking; Processes & Threads; Security; Source Code; and System Information folders which includes all the files and all the web pages which accompanied each of those folders.

I also have another copy of essentially all of the individual files and web pages, taken again on 8/18/06 which is not in a rar file. Again these do not have M$'s re-compiled files.

By the way, M$ is offering a zip file of the utilities in their "new" format in the file:

SysinternalsSuite.zip

It does not include anything but the utilities themselves. It is approximately 7.5 MB.

Regards,

i thought all the stuff from sysinternals was preserved on the 'move' to the technet site, its probably under different categories, essentially all process monitor is is regmon+filemon+the other process tool merged, nice to have it under one exe though, another crap thing worth mentioning is that the tools do NOT unload their drivers when exiting, which can be a nuisance sometimes and im pretty sure they could easily add that feature.. expecially when some programs blacklist those tools and you can require a reboot to get past the blacklist...

I rechecked my rar file and it doesn't contain the source code, but I do have that folder in my other set of the files from August. It's an additional 4.1 MB.

I'll upload the rar file and the "source folder" to the ftp sometime today.

By the way, the one's in MarcElBichon's listing which have the word "source" as part of the zip file title, do appear to have the same source files as were in the original "source" folder for Systernals.

[EDIT]: Upload of the systernals rar file is complete and the source folder is underway. Systernal Source Code folder uploaded. It won't let me move them into the Public Folder at the moment. SFV file for the Source Code is in the Source Code Folder. SFV file for the www.systernal.com.rar is in the incoming folder.

I've PM'ed Aaron to move them into the Tools Folder into a subfolder to be named "Systernals". Anyone else having permission to move files on the ftp may also feel free to do so. Thanks.

[EDIT]: These files are currently in the NEW Folder!

Regards,

Just to keep the lists that MarcElBichon and Sharky_Canada posted of "original" Systernal files still available on the M$ server more complete, I add the following ones, I believe were not included on those lists.

http://www.sysinternals.com/Files/DebugView9x.zip
http://www.sysinternals.com/Files/DebugViewNT.zip
http://www.sysinternals.com/Files/Defrag.zip
http://www.sysinternals.com/Files/Diskkey.zip
http://www.sysinternals.com/Files/Filemonamd64.zip
http://www.sysinternals.com/Files/fmifs.zip
http://www.sysinternals.com/Files/Native.zip
http://www.sysinternals.com/Files/secdemosource.zip
http://www.sysinternals.com/Files/secdemo.zip
http://www.sysinternals.com/Files/TVCache.zip
http://www.sysinternals.com/Files/VCMon.zip
http://www.sysinternals.com/Files/VCMonsource.zip
http://www.sysinternals.com/Files/VXDMon.zip
http://www.sysinternals.com/Files/VxDMonsource.zip

Some of these files are outdated by updates which apparently work on multiple systems, such a Debugview, Filemon, and Regmon, but they are included for the sake of completion of potential files still available.

Again, none of these include any of the "How to" instructions for the tools, which ARE available in the files I've uploaded to the Server. Those files are available for the "current" tools on the M$ site.

Regards,

just out of curiosity

apart from dumb little eulas that almost everyone would dismiss without caring to even glance an eye over it and wouldnt in thier wildest dream think of complying with them

and if it phones home would rip those parts apart and maim it and make it behave like minions

and may be a little bloated additons bell and whistles

what difference does it make if the same applications are available from microsoft itself

are there any significant differences completely new playing fields and new rules
that would completely alter the game

which warrants hoarding these files ?

anyway just an opinion if any one really can spell the difference between the raped downloads and virgin chicks i would be happy to read them
and may be even try to hoard these

Now that M$ owns Systernals, it is in their interest to prevent those files from accessing things they don't want you to see. As time progresses they will provide less and less functionality with such tools so others will not clearly know what is going on "under the hood." Systernals acquired their knowledge without the assistance of M$ and developed their tools to show what THEY wanted to discover.

If you think that a "new" file that is at least 3 times bigger that the previous file, without any apparent added functionality is "better" you are, always, free to use what MS makes available to you and avoid the downloading of the "original files."

The only thing I have seen on their site is discussion of some additional functionality for VISTA is some of the releases, but we can be relatively sure they are carefully tailoring what we can see and what we can't to suit their own needs.

You get to choose. No one is twisting your arm to download anything.

Regards,

Untill such time as someone can demonstrate that functionality has been removed from the microsoft release of the tools, I dont much mind.
