Lessons of Techland's Dying Light 2
On February 4, 2022 after just adding Denuvo protection around 2 days prior to launch, this game was released. Roughly 6 months or 182 days later, EMPRESS had at last defeated the Denuvo protection

So this did effect TechLand's Dying Light 2 Stay Human: Nutcracker Bundle released on December 22, 2022. So based on this fact that TechLand got their nuts cracked so to speak, the question to discuss: what type of applications are sophisticated protection mechanisms okay for and what are not e.g. games. Also wis piracy generally a service problem with the company making the software? I find the better a service is, the less piracy occurs regardless of technological measures in place. |

Sadly, this is not the case with most games now that make use of Denuvo and instead the protection is never removed or only removed after massive backlash from the community if the game suffers from extremely poor performance or is cracked. (And even now in some cases, even after being cracked it's still not removed.) It's been proven time and time again that Denuvo absolutely does affect the performance of games, to varying degrees based on how in depth its integrated/implemented into the games codebase for the virtualizations. Nearly every time a game has Denuvo removed, benchmarks are released showing pre/post Denuvo performance which shows that the game did have a performance impact from using the protection. (Again, the level of impact will vary based on how much virtualization the game made use of when integrating the protection.) If companies that utilize Denuvo on their games went back to that initial sales period protection only, and then promised to remove it after that 6-12 month period, it'd probably have a much better reputation. Sadly, that is pretty unlikely to happen at this point. The main concern now is the fear that Denuvo is going to land up bricking games down the line from companies that go under, stop updating/supporting various titles and never remove the protection. In the event Denuvo goes under/shuts down, then the means to obtain a license to play the game will become impossible causing games to be 'bricked' until they are cracked, or other means of bypassing/emulating the Denuvo service(s) are made.
