What does a loader actually do?

A newbie question I know, but we all start somewhere, I've never used one, and don't really know what they are or do.
Do they run every time your target program runs, and patch the program in memory without actually altering the program itself, or am I way off the mark with this guess?
Is it a way of getting round a program that has a crc check you cant kill?

it load a process & execute it, then wait few seconds to let the application unpack itself (in case it's packed or something)... then it patch it in memory...

try ABEL, nice work done by c0rdat

Thanks, d/l that to try, I'm currently trying out Princesssandy, that seems real easy to use, made my first loader earlier today, seems to be working too.
