I did not even know until recently that the 2 were even different.

@ZeNiX, I understand You and aaron are CN, right? I can help you, maybe another mod like mr.exodia will verify what I say...

We will use the two buttons as following soon.
[Add Reputation]
[Thanks]

Also, as I explained before, [Thanks] gave one reputation point in the past.

Newbie user can collect enough [Thanks] to be promoted to VIP by a [Happy New Year] or [Happy Birthday] post. I know this is a mistake of promotion rule. So, we tried to make changes to avoid such kind of mistake.

I did not know about these "New year" and "Happy Birthday" posts... where can I learn more?

I think the change to Add Reputation and Thanks is a good one but still needs further clarification for new members. As an english native speaker, it just doesn't make sense to have a seperate button for "Thanks" and "reputation" -- by your description, Thanks is more valuable than reputation, but it doesn't seem to be working like that..?

My suggestion is to keep "Add Reputation" -- remove "Thanks" - merge them. Reputation == thanks.

The problem is that some people has a habit of clicking [Thanks] on every post he reads. In that case, reputation point become useless.

That is why we split into [reputation] and [thanks].

I see, but the differentiation for the rest of us who do not hit "thanks" for every post is slim to none. I did not know that one was worth more than the other or that one provided something that the other did not. Just saying

There is also too enough confusion associated with this button for me to not use it.

1) The button is marked Thanks.
2) I think if you press it it adds a Like, not a Thanks
3) The button calls post_groan.php with parameter post_groan_add. When does it add a Groan?
4) 'Like' is not just a verb, it has many uses as follows :

To a native speaker, 'like' is a very weak word :

"I would like to go for a walk".
"Q. Want a cigarette? - A. if you like".
"I would like to go to bed now"
"He smells like Grandpa Simpson"
"I would like to go shopping"
"He was like, cool man"
"Looks like it is going to rain"

Just some of the 10 different way 'like' is used in the English language.

@Git: "I like your post!"

Anyways, the 'Thanks' button is meant to be the new 'Thank you' button. It was placed instead of the groan and some texts were renamed because this BB doesn't support it directly (I think).

Just some things remain unchanged it seems

Is this supposed to motivate more people in generating more high quality content? I liked the old way when you were transitioned by staff, gave it a sense of eliteness, in the good sense (also it was what motivated me to try to join).

The idea is:

We do not have to judge and press [Thank] and [Reputation] to each post which might be useful. For example,

If the post is only useful to me and useless to other people, I give [Thanks] or [Reputation].
If the post is useful to 100 people but useless to me, I do not give [Thanks] or [Reputation].

Dear Git,

Please allow me to say that this is a forum for reversing, not for English teaching.
So, our idea is that we make a system working and we try to understand how it works.

I know there are many meanings of [Like].
I also know there are many different meanings of [Thanks] and [Please].
But I believe it will become not so important as long as we we all understand what they are.

And I am almost 100% sure that no matter what we do, we are unable to make it 100% perfect. Just like that there is no perfect coding/programming.

IMO there is no problem to use 2 positive buttons if the users know the difference between them. So the problem is not the buttons themselves but how we use them. We have to know that reputation button is more important (bigger / better / etc.) than thanks button, at least for now.

One more difference is that [Friend] can click [Thanks].
Family and higher can click both.

Which means, Friends cannot give reputation, but they can thank.

And, yes, we need help of our old members to explain to those who are confused.

Definitely. Also, you will never please everybody. My only real gripe all along is that we have lost the ability to thank somebody for their post, but I don't seem to be able to make you see that. Yes, we have a button called Thanks, but that is not what it does. You may think I am English language nit picking, but there is a big difference between Thanks and Like. They have no relationship whatsoever, yet we have them on the same button!. A few weeks ago we could do the common courtesy of thanking somebody for their post, now we cannot.

I'll shutup now.

The 'Thanks' button still needs some fixes. Maybe an admin and just S&R this in some php files? I think everything will be good then.
